Mautic is a powerful marketing automation tool, but it doesn’t have to be complicated. This guide walks new users through the process of creating a nurture campaign.

A nurture campaign is an automated journey that sends messages, adjusts contact points, and more over time to build trust, educate leads, and guide them toward a goal. Nurture campaigns are four to ten times more likely to receive a response than a standalone email, making them a vital part of day-to-day lead nurturing.

What Is a Nurture Campaign?

A nurture campaign sends the right message at the right time based on contact behaviour. This can include actions such as filling out a form or reaching a specific number of points.

For example, a contact downloads a guide → receives a follow-up email → wait a few days → receives more helpful content. Then, if they open the email, the lead is passed on to a specific user for follow-up.

What You Need Before You Start

  • To create a segment (who the campaign is for)
  • At least one email
  • A clear goal (educate, onboard, or convert)

Step 1: Create a Segment

  1. Go to Contacts → Segments
    2. Click New
    3. Name your segment
    4. Add filters (e.g. form submitted or tag applied)
    5. Save
This determines who enters your campaign. Want to know more about creating segments in Mautic? Read our blog.

    Step 2: Create Your Email

    1. Go to Channels → Emails
    2. Click New
    3. Choose Segment Email
    4. Add a subject line and content
    5. Save

You can create more emails later as your campaign grows. We made a deep dive into how to create an email in Mautic.

      Step 3: Build the Campaign

Now it’s time to bring everything together and build your nurture campaign. This can be as simple or advanced as you want it to be.

      1. Go to Campaigns → New
      2. Name your campaign
      3. Select your segment

Now you can start adding actions.

        Step 4: Add Campaign Actions

        • Send Email – sends your message
        • Wait – adds a time delay between steps
        • Decision – reacts to a behaviour (email opened, link clicked, etc.)

Simple flow example: Send welcome email → wait 3 days → send helpful follow-up email.

          Example Use Cases

          Lead Nurture:

          • Trigger: Ebook download
          • Emails: Education → tips → demo invitation

          Customer Onboarding:

          • Trigger: part of the “New customer” segment

Emails: Welcome → getting started → support resources.

            Final Tips

            • Keep your first campaign simple
            • Use clear names for emails and campaigns
            • Test emails used in campaigns with your own email address

Mautic nurture campaigns help you engage contacts automatically with the right message at the right time. Start with a simple setup, learn from your results, and build more advanced campaigns as your confidence grows.
